Tatarstan Expects to Welcome More Than 50,000 Tourists from China in 2025

By the end of 2025, tourist traffic from the People's Republic of China to Tatarstan may exceed 50,000 people. This was announced by Sergey Ivanov, Chairman of the State Committee of the Republic of Tatarstan for Tourism, at the III International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation”.

“Currently, there is a 15% increase comparing with 2024. Of course, the direct flight between Kazan and Shanghai contributes significantly to this. Plus, many Chinese tourists who come to Moscow also visit Tatarstan. First and foremost, we introduce them to the cultural and historical heritage of the republic, UNESCO sites, downtown of Kazan, the island town of Sviyazhsk, and the Great Bolgar,” he said.

Tourists from China are interested in river trips on the Volga and cruises between Tatarstan and Moscow or St. Petersburg. Next year, there are plans to launch such a tourist product for them.

Ivanov noted that Tatarstan is interested in many destinations for launching new flights from Kazan to China. The most promising would be cities and provinces with which the republic has close ties at various levels, such as Chongqing, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Shenzhen, Urumqi, and Chengdu.

“Few Chinese tourists visit Tatarstan, but I believe that this region has enormous tourism potential. First of all Chinese citizens who once studied or worked here come to the republic. I would like to note such features of Tatarstan as its multinationality, customs and traditions, which are still little known in China. But thanks to promotion through bloggers who talk about this, I think the tourist flow to the republic will increase,” said Liu Rongsheng, CEO of the International Travel Agency Talang Tour (Anhui Talang Tourism LLC).

According to him, tourists in China can be divided into two groups. The first group includes middle-aged citizens who travel to Russia in organized groups. They most often visit cities such as Vladivostok, Moscow, and St. Petersburg.

The second group consists of young Chinese people, usually bloggers, who travel independently. They choose Russian cities such as Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Murmansk and talk about them on their social media accounts.

Liu Rongsheng believes that many Russian cities could be made more tourist-friendly for Chinese visitors, for whom it is important that transport infrastructure is equipped with signs and markings in Chinese. He cited Moscow's Sheremetyevo International Airport as a good example. According to him, the presence of Chinese language signage is not only convenient for tourists, but also makes them feel welcome.
