China is considering participation in Tatarstan energy infrastructure modernisation

The development of joint energy projects, the localisation of high-tech equipment, and the implementation of digital solutions are becoming new growth areas for Russian-Chinese cooperation. One of the promising areas today is the participation of Chinese companies in the modernisation of Tatarstan’s power grid. These and other issues related to the energy partnership between Russia and China will be part of the business programme of the 4th International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation”.

According to industry experts, China’s participation in upgrading the Republic of Tatarstan’s grid infrastructure is currently being discussed. This will be a logical continuation of existing joint projects in industry and energy power.

Russian-Chinese cooperation in this area has already expanded beyond individual contracts. Tatarstan companies “TGK-16” and “Setevaya Kompaniya” (“Network Company”) signed memoranda of cooperation with the Chinese corporation TBEA, a global leader in transformer equipment production. Energy power, digital substations, and renewable energy sources will be among the topics of the “Industry” track at the SPROUTS Forum.

Another example of successful collaboration is one of the Republic’s largest industrial projects, the Ammonium Complex in Mendeleyevsk, for which the China National Chemical Engineering Group Corporation acted as the general contractor. Experience in implementing similar projects confirms the high level of expertise of our Chinese partners in the construction of energy-intensive industrial facilities.

New prospects are also opening up in power engineering industry. Experts estimate that cooperation is currently growing most dynamically in the low-voltage equipment, industrial automation, frequency converters, and uninterruptible power supplies sectors, where the share of Chinese solutions in new procurements already reaches 40–60%. In solar energy and energy storage systems, this figure is 70–90%.

A separate area of cooperation is the digitalisation of the energy sector. Russian and Chinese companies are already discussing pilot projects in industrial artificial intelligence, predictive equipment diagnostics, digital twins, and intelligent energy management. Experts note that the combination of Chinese technology platforms and Russian engineering expertise could form the basis for the creation of new joint ventures and the development of export-oriented solutions.

The SPROUTS Forum annually brings together representatives of government, business, and the expert community from both countries. This year, energy power, industrial cooperation, and technological partnerships will be included in the business programme, where projects with the potential to shape the industry’s development for years to come will be discussed.

“These are no longer one-time projects, but a systemic industry dialogue that creates a roadmap for years to come,” noted Oleg Gusev, the Head of the “Energy power. Power Engineering” Industry Committee of the Business Association of Clusters of Russia and a member of the Industrial Cluster of the Republic of Tatarstan.
