Only the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan is participating in the competition from Russia - it will compete for victory with cities from Germany, Greece, Brazil, China, Turkey and India.
Kazan became the only Russian city to be shortlisted for the Guangzhou International Urban Innovation Award. The capital of the Republic of Tatarstan submitted a project for the improvement of the Maloye Chaikovo Lake Park. Kazan will compete for victory with such cities as Mannheim, Tehran, Antalya, Bogota, Sao Paulo, Cape Town, Jakarta, and others.
The shortlist of 15 cities from around the world that submitted innovation projects to the competition included: Mannheim (Germany), Antalya (Turkey), Bogota (Colombia), Cape Town (South Africa), Jakarta (Indonesia), Tehran (Iran), São Paulo (Brazil), Gwangju (Republic of Korea), Halandri (Greece), Istapalapa (Mexico), Kampala (Uganda), Pimpri-Chinchwad (India), Ramallah (Palestine), and Xianning (China). In total, more than 400 cities from around the world have submitted applications for the competition.
Five winning cities will be selected at the end of the competition. The results will be announced in December this year at the World Mayors Forum.
The International Award for Urban Innovation has been held in Guangzhou since 2012. The competition aims to reward cities for their outstanding contribution to improving social, economic and environmental conditions, as well as to promote the exchange of experiences in urban innovation. The Prize promotes inclusive, safe, sustainable cities and settlements, supports efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and create a new urban agenda.
The Prize is supported by the World Organization of Cities and Local Authorities (OCLA), the World Association of Large Cities (Metropolis) and the Guangzhou City Government.
