Russia and China will hold negotiations on the launch of a programme to reintroduce the Asiatic wild dogs’ (dholes) population in Russia. This was announced by Svetlana Akulova, Director General of the Moscow State Zoo and Moscow City Duma Deputy, at the 4th International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation”, while answering journalists’ questions.
“The Asiatic wild dogs have disappeared from Russia; they have migrated to China. This requires work from the Ministry of Natural Resources. We want to develop a conservation programme to reintroduce this species to Russia. Perhaps the regions would also be interested in working on this,” Svetlana Akulova said. Furthermore, regional contributions to the conservation of Amur tigers are crucial.
Such projects could become part of “furry diplomacy” with China, where zoos share experiences and collaborate on projects to preserve rare species. For example, one such project is breeding of giant pandas, which involved bringing a two of these animals to the Moscow Zoo, they are a female named Dingding and a male named Ruyi, together they had Katyusha, a cub naturally born. She will live in Moscow until she’s four years old, then move to China, where she will be matched with a mate so she can contribute to the restoration of the giant panda population. Svetlana Akulova noted that Katyusha would be able to thrive in the wild, as her mother has taken on the responsibility of caring for her, a unique trait for this species. Therefore, Katyusha is of great worth to the conservation programme. Her parents have come to Russia for a 15-year stay, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement.
According to Svetlana Akulova, it would be great if other zoos across the country joined the giant panda breeding project, but it requires significant work and financial investment. “The zoologists in the regions are excellent. There wouldn’t be any problems with maintenance. The only issue is the financial aspect, as the biggest costs are the bamboo and staff salaries,” said the Director General of the Moscow Zoo.
Vyacheslav Lyadov, CEO of Sany Group in Russia, stated that the era when Russian-Chinese cooperation was primarily based on trade in goods is gradually becoming a phenomenon of the past. He believes the new era will be characterised by deeper collaboration and industrial cooperation, as well as the introduction of new energy power solutions, new technologies, and new products.
He believes the first and most important area for the Russian economy is the production of heavy machinery and industrial equipment. “Today, Russia is actively developing import substitution and replacing European products and supplies. In this area, the creation of Russian-Chinese joint ventures and the adjustment of Chinese machinery and equipment to Russian market requirements and standards could generate very strong market demand,” Vyacheslav Lyadov stated.
The second area is the implementation of projects in the field of green energy and intellectualisation.
“Finally, I believe that Russian-Chinese cooperation has already entered a new phase. The key feature of this new stage should be not just the supply of finished products, but joint design and development, as well as localised production. Cooperation should not be limited to traditional internal combustion engine technology. It should also include the introduction of new energy, smart technologies, and related products,” stated the CEO of Sany Group in Russia.
