Russia and China to set new record for container shipments via Northern Sea Route

This year, Russia and China are set to achieve a new record in container cargo volumes transported via the Northern Sea Route. The total volume of shipped goods will exceed 400,0 thousand tons — more than double the figure recorded last year, RIA Novosti reports, citing Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the Rosatom State Corporation.

According to Mr Likhachev, the overall number of container shipments is expected to rise by approximately 60 %.

The Northern Sea Route is the shortest navigable route between the western part of Eurasia and the Asia‑Pacific region. It spans approximately 5,6 thousand kilometres. Last year, the total volume of freight traffic along the route reached nearly 37,9 million tons.
