Universities of Tatarstan Aim to Strengthen Collaboration with Chinese Universities

At the III International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation”, reports were presented by top engineering universities of the Russian Federation and leading educational centers of China. They showcased their developments and shared successes, said Irina Akhmetova, Vice-Rector for Development and Innovation at Kazan State Power Engineering University (KSPEU), Doctor of Technical Sciences.

“Currently, the practice of double degree programs is developing, involving cooperation between two universities from the Russian and Chinese sides. It is mainly realized through the 2+2 scheme, students study for two years in China and two years in Russia. They receive two diplomas at once. This creates a synergistic effect – we strengthen our scientific courses, combine cultures, and introduce students to each other, which reinforces our partnership and the friendship between our countries,” stated Akhmetova.

The goal of the educational organizations is to develop the technological sovereignty of both countries. Both states express interest in cooperation.

“We want to have international cooperation in the field of engineering education. This is a promising direction. We also hope for international practical opportunities needed by both Russia and China,” noted Li Wei, Head of the Admissions Management Department at the International Faculty of the Hebei University of Engineering.

Roman Moiseev, Vice-Rector for Educational Activities at KNRTU-KAI (Kazan National Research Technical University named after A.N. Tupolev – KAI), mentioned IT, microelectronics, and additive technologies among the most promising areas for university cooperation. For this purpose, students from the university go to the Northwestern Polytechnical University in Xi'an.

“China has leaped forward in the following directions: mobile phone production, data centers, big data processing, artificial intelligence, and automotive industry. The task is to try and create an engineering core for student training. Our Chinese partners are interested in the area of aircraft engines. Their aviation industry has also leaped forward. I believe this will be beneficial for developing not just educational programs, but joint projects, for example, with the Rostec state corporation and leading Chinese manufacturers,” said Moiseev.

Another area is hard-to-recover oil reserves, said Anvar Dzhavrubaev, Deputy Director for Development of the Advanced Engineering Oil School at the Higher School of Oil. In his opinion, this is the point where China and Russia can be considered international technological leaders.

“Our rector visited the top five leading oil universities, and agreements have been secured with all of them. We plan to take the first steps in academic mobility starting from this autumn. Furthermore, we have our own Chinese language center where we engage in citizens of the People's Republic of China. We are the only center in Tatarstan accredited to hold HSK exams,” stated Dzhavrubaev.
