16 July marks the 25th anniversary of signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. This document laid a solid foundation for the modern Russian-Chinese strategic partnership.
Successful implementation of the key provisions of the 2001 Basic Treaty over a quarter-century allowed the leaders of Russia and China to decide to extend it for another five-year period, until 2031. This step became one of the key practical outcomes of the meeting between the Russian President Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping in the People’s Republic of China on 19–20 May, 2026.
An official reception marking the 25th anniversary of the Sino-Russian Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation was held at the Russian Embassy in China on 14 July. The event brought together over 600 guests, including Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs Liu Bin. Particularly noted that Zhou Li, former Deputy Director of the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee, who participated in drafting the Treaty in 2001, also attended the event.
Over the past years, cooperation between the two countries has reached a qualitatively new level, encompassing trade, investment, industry, science, education, culture, and interregional cooperation.
The work of the International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation” is built on the principles of mutual respect, trust, and commitment to joint development. It annually brings together representatives of business, government, and the expert community of the two countries.
