Kazan residents and guests will witness the spectacular Chinese Dragon Boat Races, which have already become a key event of the International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation”. The competition will take place on 16 August, 2026, on the embankment of Lake Nizhniy Kaban as part of the fourth International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation”.
The Dragon Boat Race is not only a vibrant sporting event but also an important element of cultural integration. This Festival, which has a history spanning over two thousand years, is included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List. In Kazan, the initiative to hold competitions among work teams arose five years ago, when Oleg Korobchenko became the head of the Kayak and Canoe Federation of the Republic of Tatarstan.
“The symbolism of the Dragon Races perfectly captures the essence of our cooperation with China: clear communication between all team members, a pace set by the leader, and a shared goal. These competitions are more than just a spectacular event at the “SPROUTS” Business Forum, they’re a metaphor for a successful partnership: when everyone contributes, the results exceed expectations. We see the growing involvement of companies and government agencies every year, this demonstrates that the idea has resonated with people,” noted Taliya Minullina, Chief Executive of the Tatarstan Investment Development Agency.
It should be emphasised that the growing popularity of this sport is accompanied not only by an increase in the number of participants, but also by a qualitative leap in the level of competition – competitions are becoming increasingly spectacular and intense.
The races take place on special boats decorated with a dragon’s head and tail. Each team consists of ten racers, a steersperson and a drummer who sets the rhythm. At least one woman is required on the crew. Six boats compete in each race, with the first to cross the finish line being the winner.
The application for participation continues until 15 June, 2026. Applications for participation from organisations and enterprises are accepted by email: frp.rt@tatar.ru.
