The 4th International Friendly Chess Tournament between teams from twinned and partner cities of Russia and China will be held as part of the 4th International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation”, which will be held in Kazan on 16-19 August. Over the past four years, the competition has become one of the largest youth intellectual platforms for Russian-Chinese cooperation, uniting dozens of cities from both countries.
This year, the Tournament will once again bring together young chess players under 20 years old from more than 30 Russian and Chinese cities. Representatives from twinned and partner cities will meet at the chessboard. The competition has long been not only a sporting event to them, but also an opportunity to strengthen friendships, learn about each other’s cultures, and find new like-minded people.
Interest in the tournament grows annually. Last year, 185 athletes participated, playing 1,954 games in just 90 minutes. Russia is traditionally represented by the winners of regional qualifiers from Kazan, St. Petersburg, Krasnoyarsk, Khabarovsk, Kaliningrad, Krasnodar, Grozny, Yakutsk, and other cities. China is represented by teams from Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Wuhan, Harbin, Hefei, Xiamen, Shenyang, Qiqihar, and other major cities.
The chess tournament became one of the signature features of the SPROUTS Forum’s sports programme, confirming that Russian-Chinese cooperation is developing not only in economics and industry, but also in education, youth policy, and sports. Regional cooperation between the two countries plays a particularly important role in this, opening up new opportunities for joint projects and the exchange of experience.
The Tournament is organised by the Kazan City Hall and the Tatarstan Investment Development Agency.
