Tatarstan and China can cooperate in film and animation industry

The Republic of Tatarstan and the People’s Republic of China have great potential for cooperation in film and animation industry. Ranko Tepavcevic, Director General of the ANO “Centre for the Development of Creative Industries”, announced this at the International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation” in Kazan.

“Today, it is important to address issues related to the development of creative industries. This year, Kazan acquired a new creative cluster — the Centre for Unique Craftsmanship, where people work to preserve cultures and traditions. And this is precisely one of the segments that can be exported, because uniqueness is important nowadays. Today at the Forum, we discussed the export of our festive events in the field of media arts. There is great potential in film and animation industry — our Tatarstan cartoon “Tugan Batyr”, like “Masha and the Bear”, could win the hearts of China. I think we need to work on building a system of interaction. Our Chinese partners have emphasised the importance of systematising and structuring our relationships, as well as participating in joint festivals that could be held in both China and Russia, including Tatarstan,” said Ranko Tepavcevic.

“China is a major platform for gaining experience in film production,” said Daria Bogdanova, Director of the International Relations Department at Gazprom-Media Holding. She added that China also has great potential in terms of film and TV series locations.

“We have many years of experience and see how our productions are developing, but when it comes to complex graphics, we have a lot to learn from China. We also understand that China is currently ahead of the rest in the field of artificial intelligence, and, of course, these technologies should be used to simplify and reduce the cost of film production processes,” said Daria Bogdanova.

According to her, Russia would also be interested in the experience of Chinese influencers. Daria Bogdanova believes that Russian bloggers could adopt this experience for promotion.

Russia and China have many common grounds, noted Yu Chunguang, President of the Euro-Asian Cultural Association (EACA), PhD in Pedagogical Sciences, and lecturer at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University. He noted that both countries actively cooperate in the cultural sphere. For example, 2024-2025 was declared by the leaders of the two countries as the Cross-Cultural Years of Russia and China.

“Russia and China are currently engaged in numerous projects. First of all, in film production and directing, many films have been co-produced. Second, the use of artificial intelligence for cultural integration. Third, the development of trade exhibitions and fairs in the cultural sector. Fourth, mutual cultural tourism. And fifth, art exhibitions, the purchase and sale of intellectual creations, and museum collaboration,” stated Yu Chunguang.

The International Forum “SPROUTS: Russia and China – Mutually Beneficial Cooperation” will be held in Kazan on 16-19 August.

The business programme includes such areas as interstate dialogue, creative economy, medicine, industry, education, business and entrepreneurship, business associations, finance and investment, culture, media, law, transport, agriculture, tourism, and construction.
