Chengyu and Russian proverbs: what unites our peoples?
Russian proverbs are the reflection of centuries-old experience, values and mentality of the peoples of Russia. Despite the thousands of kilometers that separate Russia and China, our ancestors talked about similar things: patience, diligence, respect for elders and wisdom accumulated over centuries.
The famous Chinese Chengyu idioms (成语) are one clear proof of this: they carry deep meaning and are often used to express moral lessons or everyday principles. For example, the expression “Think three times before you act” (三思而后行 [sān sī ér hòu xíng]) in the Russian speech has similarities with the proverb “Measure twice - cut once”. Both phrases teach us not to hurry and to think carefully about our decisions.
You will also be able to get acquainted with the mentality and philosophy of China on November 13-15: the Festival of Chinese Culture and Cinema will be held within the Forum.
